Former Fairplay postal worker faces charges

A former Fairplay postal employee has been charged with forgery, embezzlement and theft.

John Andrew Hacia was charged following an investigation by postal inspectors, who are investigators for the U.S. Postal Service, according to Dan Mihalko, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.

The three charges all stem from the same offense, he said. Hacia allegedly took money from the Fairplay Post Office and then allegedly forged documents trying to hide the discretion from May 12 through 29, 2007, and June 15 through 25, 2007.

Fairplay Postmaster Colleen Dalrymple declined to comment on the case, referring all questions to Mihalko.

Hacia was a sales and service associate, according to Mihalko, meaning he worked the counter at the Fairplay Post Office.

"Postal employees are entrusted with postal funds," he said, and they are audited on a quarterly basis.

It was during an audit that the alleged theft and forgery were discovered.

Hacia had been a postal employee since September of 1996, said Mihalko, and has had no allegations of stealing funds before.

No charges were related to stealing mail.
