Superior man killed in crash near Fairplay
U.S. 285 closed after three-car crash
A three-vehicle crash south of Fairplay on Monday claimed the life of Superior resident Christopher Kipling, 50.

The accident, which happened at 2:25 p.m., injured two others, passengers traveling in Kipling's 2005 Chevy Suburban.

Kathy Kipling, the driver's wife, and Lois Hamilton, the driver's mother, were taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver with serious injuries.

U.S. 285 was closed for nearly five hours, from 2:50 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., as crews worked on the scene.

The accident occurred approximately five miles south of Fairplay on U.S. 285 near Park County Road 5.

According to a July 27 news release issued by Colorado State Patrol, a 2001 Ford F-350, driven by Jose Sanchez of Fairplay, was traveling southbound on U.S. 285.

Sanchez failed to keep his vehicle, which had no passengers, in the southbound lane as he met a 2001 Chevy Suburban driven by Paul Arnsdorf of Broomfield.

Sanchez collided with a trailer hauled by Arnsdorf.

Following the collision, Arnsdorf traveled off the east side of the road where his vehicle came to rest. The Ford F-350 driven by Sanchez continued into the northbound lane where he collided with Kipling's vehicle.

The front of Sanchez's vehicle collided with the driver's side of Kipling's vehicle. Both vehicles traveled off the east side of the road, causing Kipling's vehicle to roll onto its passenger side.

Arnsdorf, his passengers, and Sanchez were uninjured in the crash, according to the release.

Park County Coroner Sharon Morris said the victim's family has been notified, and an autopsy was planned for July 29 to determine the cause of death for Christopher Kipling.
