I would like to say many thanks to the members of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, ARES, who supported the large-scale Fairplay Blast Exercise on Oct. 4, 2008, in Fairplay. These volunteers, on their own time and at their own expense, passed many important messages that were transmitted by voice and digital modes on the amateur bands to various command centers in the exercise.
Because of the ARES volunteers, they add another dimension to passing important information to command centers, hospitals and other served agencies. This lessens some of the congestion for traffic that might be on the Public Service frequencies.
This exercise involved five counties along with some of their emergency services and many victim volunteers. This totaled to over 300 people involved in this exercise, and we found that a number of areas need improving. Finally, I feel that the newspaper coverage could have been better. This was a major exercise for all involved to sharpen their skills, just in case.
