Delia Cecilia Gilliland
Delia Cecilia Gilliland
Como Postmaster Delia Cecilia Gilliland went home to be with Jesus on Monday, July 5, 2010, at 11 a.m. She was born on July 26, 1943, in Monroe County, Pa., to Franklin B. and Margaret M. (Lord) Miller. She grew up on the family farm with three brothers and six sisters. After high school she met the love of her life, Arthur S. Gilliland, and they were married shortly after. After five years of marriage, the family moved to Miami, Fla. In 1983 they relocated to Park County, Colo. They soon took up residence in Como, and Delia went to work for the Park County Sheriff's Office as the county switchboard operator. When she retired from the county in the late 1990s, she devoted herself to the running of the Como Mercantile and Post Office. She has been Como's postmaster for 15 years. Some will remember her in her patriotic "Let's Roll" car. She has been active in the community and always made herself available to those who needed an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on. She has always been a devoted wife, a dedicated mother and in later years a wonderful "Maga" to her 10 grandchildren. She enjoyed an active life with her family hunting, fishing and exploring the Boreas Pass area for years. The Fourth of July was her favorite holiday, and this year was the first she was too ill to help the family in the annual food booth. She had been battling cancer for the past 10-plus years. She had her ups and downs and in the end trusted in the Lord to give her the strength to go on. She has many friends in the community who will miss her. She is survived by her loving husband, Arthur Gilliland, of Como, Colo.; her daughter Julie Hammond and grandchildren Holly and Brad of Denison, Texas; her daughter Shirley and son-in-law Ed McGuire, and grandchildren Eddie, Rachel, Megan, Padrick, and Ian of Pueblo, Colo.; son Arthur Jr. and daughter-in-law Lisa Gilliland, and grandchildren John, Niki, and Julie of Jefferson, Colo; and her beloved sister Serena Miller, of Como, Colo. The family had a private ceremony for her at the Como Cemetery on Tuesday. Cards can be sent to P.O. Box 168 Como, CO 80432.
