Huskies baseball starts by splitting doubleheader

By Danny Ramey -Intern

The Platte Canyon baseball team began its season by splitting a doubleheader in Salida on March 8. Both games were high-scoring affairs as the Huskies lost 10-11 in the first game and then won 20-18 in the second game.

The Huskies lost to Evergreen 10-1 in the next game, on March 13 at All-Star Park, but details from that game were not available at press time.

Coach Greg Cooper called the Salida games a step in the right direction, adding that the Huskies could have easily left Salida with two wins under their belts.

The team by no means lacked offense as it recorded five hits, ten runs, and three walks in the first game. In the second game, the Huskies put on a fireworks show as they shelled the Salida pitchers for 23 hits, 20 runs, and six walks.

Cooper was pleased with many aspects of his team's play. He particularly liked how they worked and played as a team.

"Near the end, the team was really gluing together," he said.

He also complimented his players on their ability to keep their composure and not give up the game even when it got tight. And he said the team never gave up, fighting to the end in both games of the doubleheader.

However, Cooper also felt his players had some areas to work on. First, he said, they needed to eliminate mental errors and not let the pressure or the intensity of the game psyche them out. He also said the team needed to get a little better at closing games near the end, as they almost let the second game slip out of their grasp.

Cooper also saluted some individual efforts from the doubleheader. Dylan Whisman displayed his hitting ability as he blasted a crucial home run in the second game. Jake Jensen helped his team out by recording a save in the second game. Dominic Augustine displayed solid defensive work behind home plate as the catcher in the second game. Finally, Alex Apostol hit a crucial two-out double

"We played well but we need to focus a little more on maintaining a lead," Apostol said.

The Huskies almost allowed Salida to come back from an 11-run deficit in the second game, but they were able to hold on, thanks to Jensen.

The game against Front Range Christian, scheduled for March 9, was canceled due to poor field conditions. Cooper hopes that it will be rescheduled soon.
